These ARE the droids you’re looking for? The much-anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars story is lining up some new robotic faces along side the humans…
Star Wars fans after any information regarding Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (which will be released in the UK on 16th December) will be interested in a new droid character, which has been revealed this week. The Star Wars Show, a weekly Youtube show usually hosted by Andi Gutierrez from the Lucasfilm headquarters, revealed a brand new character from Rogue One: the droid C2-B5.
C2-B5 is actually an R2 unit, in service to the Imperial army, and used to maintain ships and other equipment. He sports a sleek black and grey paint job, and looks more shiny and new than the somewhat roughed-up R2 unit we know (originally inhabited by the late great Kenny Baker)..
However, unlike R2, the unit is apparently subject to regular memory wipes, and isn’t granted any independence, as the Imperial army likes to keep their workers subservient – unlike the Rebel forces, who let their droids get away with almost anything. Where does he fit into the story though? We will have to wait until December to find out.
In addition to the new ‘Astromech’ droid, the Star Wars Show also announced ‘Go Rogue’, a series of stop-motion animated shorts created by James de Julio, written by Kevin Ulrich, and animated by Dan MacKenzie and Tucker Barrie. The shorts are featuring all the Rogue One spin-off toys and merchandise, and are based around the character action figures having to find the building instructions for the Lego Death Star kit after they are misplaced by the Empire.
The series began last week on the Star Wars Show’s Youtube channel, and will continue through September.
Starting 30th September , the fans are invited to Go Rogue too, and create spin-off shorts and skits in the Star Wars galaxy. The winning shorts will be invited to the Lucasfilm headquarters in San Francisco, for a screening of Rogue One, as well as seeing their own short on the big screen.
