All the world’s a stage… and this year both Bruce Lee and William Shakespeare will be in that spotlight at the Fortieth Hong Kong Film Festival…
This year’s Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) will mark its fortieth year – having been founded in 1976 with a remit to broaden the world’s appreciation of eastern cinema.
Part of its schedule for the 2016 event will include honouring two very different forms of drama. One strand will mark the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death and include various versions of his ‘Macbeth’ including Akira Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood (1957), starring Mifune Toshiro; Roman Polanski’s controversial The Tragedy Of Macbeth (1971) and the most recent on-screen interpretation – Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth (2015) which stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.
The festival will also be hosting screenings of digitally remastered films of Bruce Lee, all in the new 4K digital format, the crispest image yet available. The films selected are: The Big Boss (1971), Fist of Fury (1972), The Way Of The Dragon (1972) and The Game Of Death (1978).
The festival will run from 21st March to April 4th, deliberately beginning just a few days after the industry’s Filmart event that it has clashed with in some previous years. You can find out more at their official site…
