Gaze in ‘Wonder’: The new WW in WWI trailer arrives…

Wonder Woman

We’ve had to wait a long time for an A-List super-heroine, but now the debut of DC’s ‘Wonder Woman‘ is less than six months away… and we get our first proper look at its sense of scale…

DC/Warners have got a lot of criticism for the state of their own big-screen superhero universe and most of it perfectly valid given the dark, cynical tone. So the new trailer for Wonder Woman is like a breath of fresh air. It’s always hard to tell from a trailer alone, but the newly released footage of her ‘origin’ story gives an indication of a sense of scope and adventure without losing that sense of, well… wonder. Largely set in the time-frame of World War I it sees the conflict reach the edges of Wonder Woman’s home and impresses on her on the need to venture into the outside world to see the scale of the war.

Chris Pine – most recently seen helping Joss Whedon encourage US citizens to vote next week – is Steve Trevor, the soldier ‘Diana’ saves and ultimately her guide to the world beyond her borders. Danny Huston is one of vile villains determined to uncover the truth about his new adversary…and the cast also includes Connie Nielsen, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya and Lucy Davis. Michelle MacLaren was originally planned to direct the film but she dropped out over creative differences –  with Monster‘s Patty Jenkins then coming on board (and apparently things have worked much better than when Jenkins left Thor: The Dark World for similar reasons).

Wonder Woman opens in cinemas on 2nd June 2017.
