In a week where we’ve journeyed back to classic sci-fi cinema landscapes, it seems only right that ‘Blade Runner 2049‘ should also make an appearance with a teaser trailer…
1982’s Blade Runner is considered to be one of the cornerstones of modern sci-fi cinema. An adaptation ofPhilip K. Dick’s story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, it gave us a world where robotics have advanced so much that it’s almost impossible to tell them apart from humans. Detectives known as Blade Runners are hired to track them down should the ‘replicants’ escape into society and out of human control. The film, directed by Ridley Scott is known for the stress it caused everyone involved, the various different versions of the original available and its stunning visualisations of what was then a far future world: 2019.It featured Harrison Ford in the central role of Rick Deckard with the fugitive replicants, who have returned to Earth, being played by Ruger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, Joanna Cassidy and Brion James.
Given some of the hints and twists within the story there was always talk of a sequel, though pragmatically it seemed unlikely. However a couple of years ago, the deals started to come together and the film went into production in the last year – and now has a release date of 6th October 2017. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) it will see Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Deckard, being sought out this time by a younger ‘Blade Runner’ played by Ryan Gosling.
Beyond that, we know very little, except the film will be R-Rated and the new trailer – out today – shows equally striking environments for the story to unfold within…
