It looks like you CAN play more than one major character in the same(ish) universe… as Josh ‘Thanos’ Brolin is confirmed as ‘Cable’ in ‘Deadpool 2‘…
Josh Brolin has long since been announced in the role of Thanos, a character and performance that has – so far – only been glimpsed in brief, key moments of various Marvel Studio films. He will come more into focus in the two-film Infinity War, starting next year.
But today’s news is that Brolin has been cast as another Marvel character: the much-discussed ‘Cable’ in the Deadpool sequel. The role has been under the microscope since plans to include the character were first suggested. Names such as Pierce Brosnan and Michael Shannon had been floated. The character is a grizzled mercenary who just happens to be the son of Scott Summers but whom – in Marvel‘s comic continuity, was snatched away to the future and raised by others before time-travelling back to the ‘present’. You know… as you do.
He joins Ryan Reynolds who returns to the title role and Zazie Beetz, who is playing mutant mercenary Domino. The first film flirted with references to Marvel‘s other movies, though Deadpool inhabits the Fox version (X-Men etc) of that universe rather than the main Avengers-led version. But given the deal made between Marvel and SONY regarding sharing Spider-man, anything seems possible with enough will and money involved…
Interestingly, the picture above (from his acclaimed role in Sicario), shows Brolin with Jon Bernthal who plays Marvel/Netflix‘s Punisher and Benicio Del Toro who appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy…
